 A VIRTUAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXTRAVAGANZA!

Tan Tao University (TTU), the Ho Chi Minh City TESOL Association, and Horizon TESOL, with their participant-driven ‘sharing and learning’ platform, have done it again! However, this time, they sponsored their third TESOL CAMP online, welcoming an enthusiastic group of 280 ESL teachers, researchers, educators, employers and student teachers. The other two TESOL camps were held on-site at TTU in 2017 and 2019. The Pandemic offered a unique challenge, but it was not a deterrent. Life must go on! You must push “Beyond The Limit.”

Teachers, researchers, and student teachers at home and abroad attended the online TESOL CAMP 2021 by HCMC-TESOL Association, Horizon TESOL and Tan Tao University.

THE OPENING CEREMONY

Opening remarks were made by Dr. Loc Do, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City TESOL Association. Dr. Loc Do is a charismatic speaker who clearly believes in the importance of networking within the English language educational community and in the furthering of English training.

The keynote speaker was Prof. Thach Nguyen, Vice Provost of Tan Tao University, who joined the event from the United States. Prof. Thach Nguyen firstly thanked TESOL teachers for their teaching to help improve English proficiency for Vietnamese people, and thanked the Organizing Committee for making the TESOL CAMP 2021 possible and invited to deliver a speech. While, as a medical professor in the USA who has attended many international conferences in the field, served as the Editor-in-chief of many journals, and published articles extensively, Prof. Thach fervently shared of his personal experiences in learning English to draw in his receptive listening audience.

The event featured two very competent MCs – Mr. Andrew McEvoy and Mr. Danh Le.
Mr. Danh, a superstar Vietnamese presenter from TTU, recently graduated from the School of Humanities and Languages, Tan Tao University. Mr. Danh was certainly well chosen for his role. Mr. McEvoy, who is from the UK, is a glib and personable speaker. He has a natural presence with a smooth intonation that enthralls an audience.

The Conference also warmly welcomed Dr. Ngoc Dang, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Tan Tao University, Mr. Nhon Dang, Vice Dean of the School of Humanities & Languages, TTU, Mr., and Mr. Huy Pham, Academic manager of Horizon TESOL. In addition, Mr. Huy Pham served as the ‘Technical Guru’ of the virtual camp. Without his help and devotion to detail, TESOL CAMP would not have been made possible!

THE PLENARY SESSION

Dr. John Baker from Ton Duc Thang University expertly conducted the Plenary Session regarding the overall importance of ‘Extensive Reading’ programs. Dr. Baker is a cool, calm and collected presenter. He wove through his subject with the knowledge and passion of a true professional educator. His presentation could have easily been a full day workshop, as he impressively covered a great deal of information in a short amount of time.
