Mission
The School of Humanities and Languages exists to equip students with the linguistic skills and cultural experience necessary for living, working, and implementing innovation in a global English-speaking society.
Vision
The vision of the School of Humanities and Languages is to become a center for language and cultural studies, contributing innovation and learning to Vietnamese society through talented and educated youth, resulting in Vietnam’s prominence on the world stage.
- KNOWLEDGE -
Have basic knowledge of micro- and macroeconomics, political theories, Vietnamese laws and national defense;
Have knowledge of Vietnamese culture, society and tradition as well as the world’s civilizations.
Have a thorough grasp of general knowledge of English sound system, syntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics and discourse to understand the English language and use it as grounds for contrastive linguistics;
Have knowledge of culture, history, economy, society, people, politics, education, literary works, cross-cultural communication among the English-speaking countries;
Have fundamental knowledge of other areas of study modeled by the American liberal arts education;
Know research methodology in the fields of social sciences and humanities;
Obtain another foreign language, including Korean, Japanese, Chinese, French, etc.
Demonstrate a valid English test score of TOEFL PBT 600/ TOEFL iBT 100, or IELTS band 7.0 or equivalents.
Have an in-depth understanding about the general linguistics and the US-UK culture, society and literature;
Have a thorough grasp of general knowledge of English sound system, syntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics and discourse to understand the English language and use it effectively;
Have knowledge of the English-speaking countries’ cultures, cross-cultural communications, and in particular, the history and notable literary works of the US-UK;
Have a thorough grasp of general knowledge pertaining to translation and interpretation theory, which can be applied to relevant translation and interpretation activities;
Have basic knowledge of education, methodology, English-teaching situations, and work-related IT;
Have knowledge of dialectical or critical thinking and theories;
Have linguistic and socio- cultural knowledge as well as knowledge of interpretation & translation and English methodology to meet the always-changing needs of the society;
- SKILLS -
Professional skills
Four language skills proficiency -- listening, speaking, reading, and writing --in all academic and non-academic situations;
Accurate translation and interpretation of all text genres from Vietnamese into English and vice versa;
English writing proficiency in a variety of written forms to include essays, theses, announcements, letters, email correspondences and many other kinds of text;
The ability to apply English knowledge in a culturally appropriate and socially acceptable manner;
Applications of basic theories of education, teaching methods, in-class scenarios, classroom management, and IT for teaching and assessment.
Soft skills
Teamwork building skills that support the exchanging of information and sharing of ideas;
Competency in presentations and public speaking skills;
Strong independent study and research skills;
Adaptability and flexibility to the professional requirements and the job environments locally and globally;
Excellent time management and organizational skills
English proficiency requirement
Students are expected to demonstrate a valid English test score of TOEFL PBT 600/ TOEFL iBT100, or IELTS band 7.0, or equivalents. Apart from that, they need to achieve a level for another foreign language that can be Japanese, Korean, French, Chinese or another common foreign language.
APPLICATION OF ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE “REAL WORLD”
- Application of academic knowledge in the “real world” and for continued self-study after graduation. Be able to analyze linguistic and cultural factors, having a grasp of contemporary issues, and realizing the significance of English studies for international integration;
- Have the ability and confidence to pursue a Master’s program at international universities in Vietnam or abroad.
