To mark the official launch of the Tan Tao English-speaking club (TEC), at 13:30 p.m. on April 6, 2021 at Gillis Hall, Student Affairs department and Student Union collaborated with the academic advisor from the School of Humanities and Languages, the English speaking club successfully organized the SPEAK-UP centered at the theme “Social media”. The event targeted students of Tan Tao High School for the Gifted (TTS) and those of Tan Tao University (TTU).

Under the graceful and witty instruction by the MC Tran Thi Thuy Tien, Head of the TEC, the event took place in three parts, including warm-up activities prior to the discussion session, puzzle solving, and idea presentations on ‘Social Media”. Through fun games, participants broke the ice successfully to make friends with their team members under the guidance from the coaches. With their intelligence and logical reasoning, the participants quickly got used to and coordinated with each other from simple games demonstrating individuals’ personality in “Charades” to “Chinese Whisper” showing the teammate’s understanding and the team’s solidarity in winning the “Crossword Puzzle”.

Participants gradually became more and more confident when entering in the group work, they discussed and reported their team’s idea on the topic of “Social Media”. The team members presented their ideas on “Why is social networking important in our life? What are the positive and negative effects of social media? The club attendees also suggested solutions on how to apply social networks in modern life effectively

.

After the discussion time, individual groups presented and then cross-questioned the presentations passionately, which contributed to the success of the event. More importantly, the participants accumulated useful values for themselves upon using social networking sites as one of the indispensable tools in the mental life of the young people today.

The success of the first event promises to provide more hands-on and useful experiences for students. As stated in its aim, TEC is not only an educational playground for students to make friends of the same mind, but also practice speaking fluent English as one of the tools to become a global citizen.
